Read how Petunia overcame malnourishment and neglect!
When Petunia arrived at the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, her weary eyes reflected a life filled with unimaginable hardship. Rescued in Texas, she had been tied outside, abandoned to the elements, and reduced to just 18 pounds—a frail shadow of the vibrant dog she was meant to be. Malnourished and hesitant around people, Petunia’s spirit seemed broken, yet a spark of hope lingered in her gaze—a quiet plea for a second chance.
At HSSA, Petunia’s journey toward healing began. Our dedicated veterinary team worked tirelessly to treat her multiple injuries, including deep facial wounds, severe dental issues, and hair loss. Her tail, irreparably damaged, had to be amputated—a poignant reminder of the cruelty she had endured. But through compassionate care and unwavering determination, Petunia fought back.
In the nurturing environment provided by our foster care team and volunteers, Petunia began to rediscover trust and joy. Thanks to additional support from our New Beginnings program, which focused on confidence-building and leash training, her transformation was nothing short of extraordinary. Her weight steadily climbed to a healthy 35 pounds, and her once-guarded demeanor gave way to a playful, affectionate personality.
In August 2024, her foster parent made the beautiful decision to officially adopt her. Now named Gracie, she thrives in a loving home with her new mom and two feline companions. Gracie’s story is one of resilience and renewal, a testament to the power of love and compassionate care.
But for every success story like Gracie’s, there are countless other animals waiting for their second chance. Each day, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona welcomes new animals, many in desperate need of medical care, a safe place to recover, and a family to love them. With your support, we can continue to transform lives and offer hope to animals just like Gracie. ❤️?
Your donations help provide the necessary care for pets like her, supporting all our lifesaving work. Help us continue making
miracles happen! #rescuestory
"Shine bright like a diamond!"
Meet Diamond, a sparkling 2.5-year-old Pit Bull Terrier with energy to spare! She’s full of life and loves to play, especially with other confident, high-energy dogs who can keep up with her fun-loving spirit. Diamond is looking for a home where she can shine bright and share her joyful personality. Could you be the one to give her the loving home she deserves? ??
Check out a few PACC pups out on the town! ? #DYK? If you have even an afternoon to spare, you can be #PartOfThePACC and help dogs in need by taking a PACC pup on a day trip! ?️
Here's how it works:
1️⃣ You come to our foster office any time we're open ?,
2️⃣ We help you pick out a pup ?,
3️⃣ and you're on your way! You and your new buddy can go on a hike, get a pup cup, have a sleepover, or even just go for a drive! ?
These short breaks from the shelter can be as short as a couple of hours, but they can be literally life-changing for our pups; in fact, recent research shows that dogs that go on even a short day trip are FIVE TIMES more likely to be adopted!
So if you're heading out today for a #SundayFunday, consider taking a PACC pup along ?
Participants must be at least 18 years old and must bring their ID, and we ask that pups on Day Trips are kept separate from resident pets for everyone's safety. ?

Meet Turnip, a sweet and sociable 4-year-old cat who came to HSSA through a transfer from another shelter. She gets along well with other cats, though her feelings about dogs are still a mystery. Turnip loves giving head boops and enjoys chin and neck scratches—and if you’re lucky, she might even let you give her some belly rubs! Spayed, vaccinated, and ready for her next chapter, Turnip is eager to meet new friends and find a loving family to call her own. Could Turnip be the purrfect addition to your home? ?❤️
"Friends, we need you to step up and help us find great homes for some of our dogs. In the two days since the New Year’s Eve fireworks, we have taken in nearly 100 additional dogs. That’s on top of the high census we had been experiencing during Christmas week.
Kennel stress is a real thing, and getting some of these dogs out and into homes so they can decompress only makes them more adoptable. If you foster, please ask a friend to join you in that. If you’ve adopted from us, please encourage a friend to do the same.
This weekend is a critical time for several of our dogs so please spread the word that we need a full adoptions/foster lobby all weekend long. Being transparent with the public is our way of inviting you to be a part of life-saving solutions, and this weekend, in the aftermath of the New Year’s Eve celebrations is a key time for that.
Saturday and Sunday, our hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We’ll be fully staffed with a professional team that’s excited about working with you to find homes for our pups. I’m thanking you in advance for your help.
